Substance Use Disorder
Additional Information
In 2017, 19.7 million people age 12 or older in the United States were estimated to have a substance use disorder related to alcohol or illicit drug use, you are not alone.
Addiction is an illness that hijacks many parts of your brain, including your dopamine receptors, which is responsible for the rewarding effect you may feel when using an illicit substance. A sudden increase in dopamine may also affect parts of your brain involved in memory. These sudden large increases in dopamine can lead to conditioning and thus an increase in cravings and compulsive drug use.
